Anxiety and Its Defenses

“A Course in Miracles” tells us that defenses ‘are the costliest of all the prices which the ego would exact’ (W-153.4:1). Yet we often don’t realise when we are being defensive, engaging in plans to protect ourselves from insecurities based on shame and guilt.

In this podcast we explore the main types of defenses to anxiety outlined in Freudian psychology, along with pioneering psychoanalyst Karen Horney’s ‘Defensive Solutions.’ The discussion is based on the essay ‘Seeing the Problem as It Is: Karen Horney’s Defensive Solutions,’ taken from “Alchemists of Suburbia: A Course in Miracles, Psychology, and the Art of Integration.”

We conclude with some of Carl Jung’s last documented thoughts and apply them to Horney’s insights. The emphasis, as always, is on how to move forward, leaving the past and associated grievances behind, transformed in the light of the Holy Spirit’s healing vision.
