The Simpsons is well known for its witty one-liners. A personal favourite is Marge’s answer to her daughter, Lisa, who suggested she “just say sorry” to her husband, Homer, after an argument: “Lisa, marriage is a beautiful thing, but it’s also a constant battle for moral superiority. So, I can’t apologise.”
Humour aside, relationships are often experienced as battlegrounds in which our needs appear to be pitted against another’s, our ‘side of the story’ at odds with theirs. The pain associated with these battles can be so intense that we can wonder if having a relationship is actually good for us. Is it worth it?
This podcast explores this difficult aspect of relationships and centres around an essay called ‘Release the Hounds,’ from Alchemists of Suburbia: A Course in Miracles, Psychology, and the Art of Integration. It focuses on the section ‘The Obstacles to Peace,’ from the text of A Course in Miracles, which describes some of the hidden motivations and manoeuvres at play in our conflicts with others. Once these are understood, relationships can become a source of healing, growth, and true companionship.
